Gray Sky’s and south east drizzle greeted the 50 competitors at North Beach in Christchurch last Saturday for the South Island Primary & intermediate schools surfing titles. The event, also known as the Analog little Humans surf comp is one of the key starting points for kids looking to establish themselves as competitive surfers.
The early low tide produced some small difficult conditions that improved to a nice half to one surf meter as the tide rose.
This year’s event attracted record numbers in the year 6 and under division. Some of these kids were having their second and third years in the division, one in particular was Henry Hawke who after finishing 2nd last year produced an unstoppable performance to take the year 6 title from fellow Discovery One student Conor McLennan. The year 8 girls division was again won buy the year 7 student from Kaiapoi North school Kate Nicolson. Kate had to fight hard against Georgia Calcutt from Redcliffs School; the key to the win was the ability to link at least 2 turns on the waste high waves. The year 7 boy’s final was a one man race, Nick Tuhikarama from South Brighton School picked up a good scoring first wave and never looked like being beaten. Tuhikerama was also in the year 8 boys final where he finished 2nd to Sumner schools Max Marshall. This heat was by far the best of the day with one good wave being caught by all four competitors the difference being Marshall’s good 2nd scoring wave. All the first place division winner’s were put into a draw for a $1200 development package that includes Gravis footwear, Analog clothing a 7th wave wetsuit and 2 two hour video coaching sessions, this years lucky recipient was Nick Tuhikarama. Final results Year 6 and under 1st Henry Hawke 2nd Connor McLennan 3rd Sam Sands 4th Joe Bell, Year 7 boys 1st Nick Tuhikarama 2nd Walt Robbards 3rd Joe Bell 4th Sam Sands, Year 8 Girls 1st Kate Nicolson 2nd Georga Callcut 3rd Georgie Jackson 4th McKenzie McNeill, Year 8 boys 1st Max Marshall 2nd Nick Tuhikarama 3rd Lachie Malcolm 4th Harrison Whiteside.
